INFORMATION ON MENTORING AND POETRY CONSULTATIONS--

I am happy to work with poets of all experience levels.

Here are some online options I offer for working with poets.  Please feel free to email at
kelli (at) agodon.com if you have any questions about these sessions.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Poetry Writing Exercises/Packets & Critique:
This option works best for poets who enjoy doing poetry exercises and find they are needing some new inspiration in their writing life.
I will mail you 3-12 writing packets to your home. Each packet will include a poetry writing exercise along with other items for inspiration.  Each writing exercise is created for you to complete--your finished product will be a first-draft of a poem.  Most poets do one packet per week, but we can lengthen the time period on this to work with your schedule.   If you are going on a writer's retreat, I can also create a series of packets for you to take with you or send a series of writing packets complete over summer vacation.
Once all writing exercises have been completed and you've had time to revise your poems, I will offer feedback, editing, and critique on your work.  I'll help you determine the strongest poems from the group and help you find journals best suited for your work.
RATES for Writing Exercises/Packets plus Critique of Poems:
                       3 packets of individual poetry writing exercises    $49
                      5 packets of individual poetry writing exercises     $75
                   10 packets of individual poetry writing exercises    $135
This is a great way to generate new work and to create a more routine writing schedule.
Private Students/One-on-One Consultations  (Poetry Mentoring):
One-on-one consultations are a way for me to work individually with poets and writers to help with your writing, manuscript, or writing goals.
We can focus on your growth as a writer in whatever way you need to.  We will work on the craft of poetry and carefully look at your poems to help you become a stronger poet.
If you have never submitted your work or are a new to it, I will answer your questions about cover letters and what literary journals best suit your work.  I'll be the person you can ask all the poetry questions you've had, but have been too embarrassed or afraid to ask.  I can also help you create your own cover letter and help you find journals where to submit your work
You may want a one-time correspondence or a regular exchange of your work by mail or email. Or you may have a chapbook or full-length manuscript you are beginning to submit.  I’m available to help you with manuscripts or an individual poem, with revisions, editing, or writing exercises and ideas to help you overcome any writing blocks.
I am flexible and able to work with you on varying projects including assisting poets with book contests, manuscript submissions, and to help answer any questions you may have as you look for a publisher.
This option works well for new poets who need help finding their way around the poetry journals and would like help to find their way as a new writer, but I am also open to working with poets who have been writing and are in need of a poetry community or returning back to the writing life.
**Included in this option are 1-3 writing exercise packets which I will send you for each week.  During our time together, you will write 1-3 news poems and return them to me for feedback.  I will help you determine your strongest poems and suggest journals you may be want to submit them to. Also, each week we will have an ongoing correspondance about what's on your mind regarding poetry and I will answer your questions as they come up.  We will also put together a personalized poetry reading list for you and help determine your goals as poet and what you want from your writing life.
My experience-- I received my MFA from Pacific Lutheran University's Rainier Writing Workshop where I studied with Albert Goldbarth, Sharon Bryan, and Peggy Shumaker as well as in Marvin Bell's in his Master Class.  I am also a graduate of the University of Washington where I received my BA in English with a writing emphasis, where I studied with Linda Bierds and David Wagoner.
My teaching philosophy is that we each have our own unique voice and to nurture that.  I also believe writers need a safe, encouraging, and open place to explore their writing.  My goal as a teacher is to bring out your best poems in you and to help you grow and become a stronger poet.
In the last five years, I've worked with numerous students and taught classes at the Skagit River Poetry Festival, Western Washington University, Field's End Writers Conference, Edmonds Community College, Highline Community College, Gig Harbor Writer's Conference, Pacific Northwest Writers Conference and other festivals around the Northwest.
I am the author of two books of poems,
Small Knots (2004) and Geography, winner of Washington State's Floating Bridge Press Chapbook prize.  In 2007, I won the Atlantic Monthly's Student Writing Poetry Prize, which is awarded to one graduate student in the US.  I have also awarded two Washington State Artist Trust GAP grants, the William Stafford Prize, the Carlin Aden Award for formal verse, and a Puffin Foundation grant for my work as a poetry editor on the broadside series:  The Making of Peace.
I have worked as a Poetry Editor of the literary journal
Margin: Exploring Modern Magical Realism as well as for my current project, which is an anthology of motherhood poems with images by photographer Elisha Rain.  My work has appeared in journals such as the Atlantic Monthly, Prairie Schooner, the North American Review,Image, Meridian,and in Garrison Keillor's book Good Poem for Hard Times published by Viking Press.
I am happy to work with students of all academic experience and while I have an MFA, I do not believe it is a necessity for poets to have.  I'm happy to help you find your own path as a poet, with or without academic structure.
